Text Check: Safe or Suspicious?📱

A lot of scam texts follow the same playbook: urgency, fear, and quick action.

Spot the red flag :backhand_index_pointing_down:

  • A) “You’ve been charged $499. Click here to cancel immediately.”
  • B) “A new transaction was made. Check your app for details.”

What’s one trick you use to double-check messages like this?

I typically go into my app immediately, and fact check it. I also make sure I know what information I have agreed to receive via text, and so that helps to filter and evaluate the need for fear when receiving the text.

I delete such messages immediately, taking no chances!

I check where it came from. If it didn’t come from my banking app I just delete and ignore the message.

Just one?

  1. I used to think that the fact the message quotes a monetary value is a red flag but it seems everyone is giving away all my transaction details via unsecure email and SMS now, so hooray for Zero Liability Protection?
  2. The cents not being displayed in the transaction amount is a red flag.
  3. Click here to cancel sure makes it sound quick and easy… Too quick and easy. You normally must contact the vendor and try to get the charge refunded before you can formally dispute the charge.
