šŸ’” What counts as a recurring payment for cashback? Let’s break it down!

From what I’ve seen in the forums here, the ā€œrecurringā€ tag is sent by the merchant, so Neo doesn’t really know what is ā€œrecurringā€ until a transaction comes in from that merchant… and it isn’t always consistent. Some payments from the same merchant are marked ā€œrecurringā€ while others are not.

All that to say — I’d recommend trying it yourself. What do you have to lose?

Understood! The only thing to lose was the amount of cashback compared to what I would have gotten in my other card.
But anyway, I tried making the payment yesterday to at least have that conclusion, and I found out that Co-operators Insurance’s premium doesn’t count as a recurring payment. It is counted as a regular transaction.

Hello, I’m having same issue. This is my first month when I paid auto TD insurance of $213 but I got 1% cash back. TD confirmed this is recurring from their end since it will be charged monthly. I should be getting 4% cashback. Can someone help?

See if it counts as recurring on the 2nd monthly recurrence… If it still doesn’t show up as recurring then maybe another card will be better going forward. Nothing the vendor or Neo will do about it.

Agreed except that if TD isn’t correctly marking your monthly premium as a recurring payment, then I would recommend keeping your Neo card and getting a new insurance provider.

IS Enbridge Bill payments over KUBRA-EZ PAY when we setup recurring payment option (inside off the KUBRA EZ PAY) application for my NEO WORLD ELITE card, considered as Recurring payments or not?

One of my colleagues is leading a deep dive to figure out what causes recurring to be missed sometimes. Would you be willing to share this transaction with the report we’re building?

That’s a pretty specific setup, I haven’t tried it myself, nor heard of anyone else. We categorize things as ā€œrecurringā€ based on the merchant codes the merchant sends us, so you may have to try it and report back!

I did the same thing for my Enbridge Bill and signed up for Kubra EZ Pay auto payments, but it still never showed up as a recurring bill, and I only got 1% cashback. I am still trying to determine why Neo/Mastercard is not recognizing this as recurring billing, as the system is automating it, and it is not a manual payment.

Hi @GrantLahring_Neo
I can definitely do that, but can you tell me in detail what you need from my side so I can make sure you have all the relevant information?

It’s more complicated than it should be, to be honest, but we’re making some progress with our work now that people are sharing their stories. Most helpful for me:

  1. The merchants and dates of any transactions missing cashback.
  2. What each transaction was for.

We don’t see a lot associated with each payment so, for example, if you bought a phone case from Telus (non-recurring) or paid for streaming from Telus (recurring) we need your help to differentiate it.

Also, feels silly to mention this, but of course we have your back and I will pay out the missing recurring rewards. Appreciate your support in figuring it all out.

Hi @GrantLahring_Neo, thanks for looking into this. I’m happy to share my examples.

1. Enbridge Gas payment via Kubra EZ-Pay (missing recurring cashback)

Merchant: KUBRA EZ-PAY (for Enbridge Gas)

Amount: $126.33

Setup: When paying my Enbridge bill, there are two options: bank account or credit card. Selecting credit card redirects to the Kubra EZ-Pay portal. Kubra provides the option to securely store the card and enable automatic bill payments, which I set up.

This payment was then automatically deducted using my stored card under the Smart Payments / auto-pay setup. However, it only earned the standard cashback (1%). It was not recognized as a recurring payment, even though the system initiated it automatically, and no manual payment was made on my end.

I’ve attached a screenshot of this transaction. My next Enbridge payment ($163.35) is also scheduled through Kubra auto-pay later this month, and I suspect it may behave the same way. :smiling_face_with_tear:

2. The Co-operators insurance — clarification on recurring eligibility

At the top of this thread, The Co-operators Insurance is listed among merchants that qualify as recurring. Based on that, I tested a payment:

Merchant: The Co-operators

Amount: $135.25

This was a credit card payment made through their portal, but it earned only standard cashback (1%), not recurring cashback.

The Co-operators portal does not appear to offer automatic credit-card-based recurring billing, but only manual credit card payments. Because of that result, I did not use my Neo card for the larger insurance payment ($540) and used another card instead.

Could you clarify how The Co-operators insurance is expected to qualify as a true automatic recurring charge? From a customer perspective, the portal only provides the option to make a manual credit card payment, and there doesn’t appear to be a way to enable automatic recurring billing directly. Based on this, do manual portal payments qualify for recurring cashback, or is there a specific setup required for it to be recognized correctly?

This is perfect, thanks! I will include this in the report.

Thanks, Grant!

Just to add another data point: this morning, my next Enbridge Gas payment via Kubra EZ-Pay was automatically deducted.

Merchant: KUBRA EZ-PAY (Enbridge Gas)
Amount: $163.35
Setup: This payment was processed through the same stored-card auto-pay / Smart Payments setup, not manually initiated by me.

However, it again earned only the standard cashback (1%) and was not recognized as a recurring transaction, even though it was automatically charged by the system. :smiling_face_with_tear:

I’ve attached a screenshot of this transaction.

I am still figuring out what causes this (I have the same problem with my utilities through Enmax). I think it is because the charge is slightly different every time. But thanks for the extra info, I will add that to my report.

Hi there,
Just checking in to see if there are any updates on this, as there are other transactions that aren’t being tagged as recurring.

We’re still working on it. The report to identify missed transactions is done, so I don’t need to collect the info from you. But, if you are missing rewards, you can contact support to get them credited.

Does anyone use PC auto insurance? They distribute Aviva insurance.

If so, Does it reflect as Aviva insurance or something else? Does the recurring payment cashback apply?

I have a recurring payment with Oxygen, a chain of hot yoga and fitness gyms. I receive a reward every three payments :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
