Confession: as much as I talk about credit around here, I’ll admit I didn’t always check my own score. I’d look at Equifax or TransUnion, see that checking it required a paid subscription or jump through hoops, and immediately put it off.
The good news? You don’t need to pay a dime to keep an eye on your numbers.
Here are a few practical habits to build this month:
Know where you stand: Check your score regularly so there are zero surprises.
Scan for errors: Review your report to ensure old debts or wrong info aren’t pulling you down.
Make it a monthly habit: A 2-minute check helps you spot fraudulent activity or drops right away.
Platforms like Borrowell offer free credit checks so you can stay in the loop without opening your wallet.
A simple reminder from someone who needed it too: don’t just talk about your credit, check it.
Do you check your credit score regularly, or is it something you tend to put off?
Personally, I went YEARS without checking my score. Unfortunately growing up credit was never something talked about at home or in school so I wasn’t educated on it. When I was doing my second degree I was applying for a student LOC and the advisor at the bank asked me what my credit looked like and I genuinely had no idea. He was like ‘do you not check it’ and my response was ‘I can check it???’ . Since then it’s an every month or so habit to just take a look to make sure nothing odd is happening.
I know neo offers credit score insights on the higher memberships, which is nice for those with them. I wonder if they’ll consider ever bringing that to the free plan since another institution I know of does actually offer that (one of their very few positives I must say).
I used to never check my credit score until I needed to start paying for almost everything with one! I now check it at least once a month. Just checked it today and I’m 14 points away from a fair score
