Using POS network to prevent theft

What would you do if your phone got lost or stolen? Here’s and interesting innovation from Peru:

"In 2026, Peruvian bank BCP launched SOS POS, a service that allows customers to block access to their bank accounts through payment terminals in local shops.

The initiative responds to a growing problem in the country, where more than 4,000 mobile phones are stolen every day. Because banking apps are often linked to phones, victims can lose access to both their device and their accounts within minutes.

SOS POS transforms existing payment terminals into emergency banking touchpoints. After a theft, customers can visit a participating business, enter their ID number and PIN into the POS machine, and immediately freeze access to their accounts without needing a phone call or banking app.

The system was rolled out across more than 17,500 businesses, including grocery stores, pharmacies, hardware stores and flower shops. BCP’s goal was to place an emergency account-blocking point within two minutes of most Peruvians."

Spectacular initiative. We might think that things like this are unnecessary in Canada, but there’s always been a cat and mouse game between organized crime and legitimate account holders.

Biometric security and other advanced forms of MFA have weak points, especially when tied to a high value target of theft like mobile phones. I tend to consider mobile banking very secure, but, it’s not foolproof.

What happens if you’re mugged or coerced, and you’re forced to unlock your phone? And then forced to unlock your mobile banking app?

Not as far fetched as we might hope.

Combatting this stuff probably will involve industry solutions, rather than any one bank. I’d support Neo in this of they chose to pick up a campaign.

The problem is that most POS’s in Canada are not from banks but are from payment processors. This only works in Peru because bank processors are much more common in some other countries. Plus Neo is a fintech and they don’t even offer payment processing to begin with.
