Secured Neo MC refused by some vendors

I’ve noticed that using the secured MC product is hit-and-miss at some hotels and car rental companies. Some vendors are refusing to accept the secured card as payment because “it’s not a real credit card”. Has anyone else experienced this or is there a list of vendors (like Budget Car Rental) who refuse to accept the secured Neo MC?

I’ve personally not experienced this. Thanks for sharing and letting the community know :slightly_smiling_face:

Hey @mjmcherry70 Welcome to the Neo Community and thanks for flagging this! I’m looking into this now and should have some clarity for you on this shortly. I’ll post an update in this thread once I hear back from the team.

Do you have specific examples of hotel or car rental places that did refuse to accept the card as payment?

@Denisa.Neo, most recently Budget Car Rental at Pearson Airport in Toronto refused to accept the secured Neo MC as payment. They said it was a “corporate decision because it isn’t a real credit card”

Thanks for providing that additional info so quickly!

Over a year ago, Enterprise refused to accept the normal Neo credit card (not talking about secured): 2615 26 St NE, Calgary, AB T1Y 1A4

They said they would accept other Mastercard from “a real bank” but not Neo.

@mjmcherry70 just want to confirm here - are you 100% certain you used your secured card there and not the prepaid card?

The reason I ask is because some merchants don’t accept the prepaid card because to them prepaid = gift card and not all merchants accept gift card payments. Merchants can’t tell on their end if it’s a secured card or a regular CC, as to the POS/terminal it’s identical to a credit card and processed identical to a credit card.

@Denisa.Neo Yes, it was the secured MC. I tried having that conversation with them, but they were adamant they wouldn’t accept the card

There is not much the team can do to investigate here without having additional information from the merchant as to why specifically they would not accept the card. Do you remember them mentioning any details as to why?

@Denisa.Neo The agent said “corporate policy”, so I would expect Neo to contact Budget directly to investigate.

@mjmcherry70 Thanks for this feedback. I have made the team aware of this issue! Please let us know if this happens again at any other merchants.

Also wondering why some vending machines will not accept the tap with my Neo card?

Thanks

Hey @mjmcherry70 thanks for flagging this as well. I had a chat with a team member about this and similar to the merchant who did not accept the secured card as payment, the vending machine also would have no way to distinguish the difference between a secured card and an unsecured card. We would need more information about the vending machine attempts to diagnose.

When you say “some” vending machines, can you be more specific or provide any additional info if possible please?
