Many times throughout the year, most Canadians would receive funds from the federal government that are labelled as “Transfer from CANADA”.
This could be a tax refund, GST/HST rebate, Canada Carbon Rebate or other payments from the Government of Canada.
The problem is that all of these payments are labelled the same and people don’t know what it is for or what it is if they are not familiar with the concept.
If users figured out the source of mysterious deposits, they would have to find out where exactly they are coming from and how to find out the details about the money they have received. One can usually find out by logging into CRA account, which has a very painful login process (and Neo is not supported as a sign-in partner for CRA).
This friction can be avoided if the app gave users meaningful info about their transactions, even if that info was not or cannot be originally encoded in the description field.
One thing that can be done is using AI to tell the user what Transfer from CANADA is or provide hints on what this might be. It should not be very difficult to predict based on the amount, timing of payment etc (e.g. GST/HST rebates are paid quarterly, tax returns are paid once a year, and the amounts would be typical or fall under a similar range) given the amount of transactions coming from the federal government. Users can help refine the system when prompted to make it better, similar to how google maps asks you questions about how busy the restaurant or how crowded the bus is.
